Why is my toilet slow to fill up?

If you notice your toilet tank is not filling up properly after flushing and you are unable to flush multiple times in quick succession, you may think that you need to call a plumber. Before you take this step, there are a few checks you can carry out yourself to see if there is a quick fix. There may be a problem with your drains, or important toilet parts such as the water supply valve or float ball. It is worth checking to see that there are no issues with these parts of your toilet system. Allow us to explain how to check and resolve these problems yourself before calling a plumber.

Why is my toilet not filling up properly?

There are multiple reasons why your toilet may not fill properly, so allow us to talk you through them…

Water supply valve

If your toilet has a water supply valve below it, you should check that it is fully open. It is possible that the valve has been accidentally closed, so is preventing the flow of water into your toilet. If you are able to turn the valve to reopen the water supply line, this may allow your toilet to fill properly once again, but if this has not fixed the problem you should contact a plumber to check the valve for a blockage.

Clogged drain

You may find that it is simply a clogged drain that is causing your toilet to not fill up. An easy solution to this is to use a plunger in order to free the blockage or try vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to gradually dissolve anything that could be preventing the water from flowing.

Toilet fill valve

The toilet fill valve can be found on the inside of the toilet tank. It is a vertical tube that controls the water level in the tank. As your toilet gets older, it is possible that the fill valve will become worn down or clogged and not operate as effectively. You should remove and inspect the flush valve for any signs of damage or blockages, then make sure that the valve is secure and adjusted correctly to allow for more water to enter the tank.

If you notice a build up of gunk on the valve, there is an easy way to clean it. Turn the screws on top to remove it and turn on the water supply to allow it to flow through the valve freely, flushing out any dirt or debris.  If you notice any damage to the fill valve, replace it and secure the screws, turning the water back on to test the flush cycle and check that the toilet is now filling properly.

Valve tube

A clogged valve tube is a common occurrence but can be resolved quickly and without the assistance of a plumber. All you need to do is shut off the water supply, then use a slim brush to clean out the inside of the tube to remove anything that may be causing a blockage. You should then test this multiple times to see if this has fixed the problem.
